Transportation from/to LAX - Los Angeles International
While it is theoretically possible to take public transit from LAX to Simi Valley / Moorpark it is not practical. You best bet is to take one of the shuttle services such as the Supershuttle or Road Runner Shuttle. If you are bringing a bike the services usually require you to get an "exclusive van" which is the equivalent of a big taxi. SuperShuttle charges about $235 round trip between LAX and Simi Valley / Moorpark for a nine passenger van if you have one or nine people in it. The problem is fitting nine people and nine bikes into one van ... might not be possible - probably not. You get one van for $235 round trip. With the shuttles you tell them when to pick you up. All prices quoted here are estimates.
Transportation from/to Burbank - Bob Hope Airport (Recommended)
You can take the shuttle services from/to Burbank Airport but, you must take an "exclusive van" and the fee is about $200 for a nine passenger van with the same problems and conveniences as described for LAX.
Public transit from Burbank to Simi/Moorpark is much easier. There is an Amtrak/Metrolink station just across from the airport, but it is still a fair distance if you are carrying your bike in a box. No problem if you bike case has wheels. Amtrak runs seven days a week, but has few trains on weekends. Check the schedule for the Pacific Surfliner. Monday through Friday you can access Metrolink, which has more trains. A round trip fare on Metrolink or Amtrak runs less than $20 bucks - $180 less than the shuttle. The downside is that if you get a cranky conductor they might not let you on the train with you bike in a box. Just try and be as polite and inconspicuous as possible with your oversized luggage and you should have no problems, but no guarantees. The conductors are typically concerned about the doorway being blocked. If you can get your bike/box on the train without blocking the doorway you should be fine - I would not worry about it. There are racks for bicycles on Amtrak and Metrolink and you can put your bike & box in front of the rack. On the other hand if you plan on traveling at rush hour you might not make the train of your choice. Check the prices before you book!
Amtrak typically will not allow full size tandems or recumbents on the train unless you are at a special "Baggage Station" and it is boxed. Why they don't have a baggage station at the Burbank Airport is a testament to the strength of the taxi and shuttle drivers lobby in local politics. If your tandem has couplers, just split the bike in half and hang it in the racks - no problem. Then again if your tandem has couplers it is probably packed in two checkable size suitcases and you will not have a problem anyway.
Lodging
There are NO hotels in Moorpark. The closest hotels are located at the west end of Simi Valley, seven to eight miles from the ride start in Moorpark. This is obviously not a much of a problem for the Simi Valley start of the Fall 400 which is located at the Amtrak/Metrolink station in Simi Valley, but you still will have a short ride from the hotel to the start. For the longer rides we typically open up our house for riders the night before and after a ride. Bring your sleeping bag and a pad (hardwood floors) and we have some floor space for you. If you are interested in camping with your RV the closest one is Oak Park in Simi Valley.
Parking
Parking and the exact spot that we will start from will vary slightly with each ride. The reason for this is that for the shorter rides we typically have more cars. The greater number of cars obviously requires a bigger parking area, but the bigger parking area will not allow for overnight parking. Check the NEWS and the Google Group section for the latest on where to park for the current ride.
