Malibu Coastal Cruise

This is a beach ride. Think fun, easy, or at least as easy as it is going get for a 200 kilometer ride. I recommend taking your time and have a nice lunch somewhere along the course.  Be aware of the fact that the wind can play a significant role in your enjoyment of this ride. Extreme Santa Ana or other high wind conditions can make this ride far more difficult than the minimal amount of elevation gain would imply. Also, be aware of the fact that on a beautiful day in the middle of summer when temperatures are perfect for riding along the coast – you will not be the only one with the idea that the beach may be a good place to go. Thankfully there are either wide shoulders or a bike lane for much of the ride.  Ride defensively near Zuma Beach when parked cars have a bad habit of opening doors just in front of you. Also take care around a couple of the surf spots along the way as some of the surfers seem to watch out for car traffic but are completely unaware of the cyclist bearing down on them as they swing their surfboards around to get it in or out of their cars. My guess is that they can not hear us. I usually ring my bell while still some distance away so they become aware of me. I figure I don’t startle them, they don’t startle me. The Starbucks at the start opens at 6:00 am on the weekends so for you early birds you may want to utilize one of the nearby ATMs for a receipt if you want to get going early – it’s going to be without coffee though. This is an excellent winter ride. As many of you know, it can be much warmer along the coast than inland. You will avoid most of the crowds in winter; however on those big, winter, wave days expect crowds at the surf spots.
